How can you find the lowest gas price in your area?

Drivers can easily locate the lowest gas prices in their area using a mobile app such as GasBuddy. Many gas finder apps, as well as multi-purpose driving apps like Waze, derive their information from other users. The accuracy and currency of prices may vary.

GasBuddy is the oldest and arguably most well-known app for finding cheap gas prices. It asks users to record prices they pay at the pump and provides incentive through a point system. The points allow users to participate in weekly drawings, where they can win a $100 gas card. Both the app and the GasBuddy website allow drivers to search by city, state or zip code to find the lowest recorded prices in their area.

Waze, which allows users to record traffic information and locations of police cars, also offers a feature for finding the cheapest gas. Users may have various opinions on the accuracy of the information featured in crowd-sourced apps, and prices may not always be up-to-date, depending on the geographic area.

There are alternative apps that don't rely on user information. Gas Guru reports prices directly from the Oil Price Information Service, which may result in more current data. Vehicle app Dash, which helps users monitor the condition of their car as they are driving, provides information on gas prices obtained from an unnamed third-party source.
