It is possible to get a lung mass diagnosed as malignant or cancerous, according to Cleveland Clinic. This is done by imaging the mass over a period of time to determine its growth rate or taking a biopsy of the tissue to test its calcium levels.

A lung mass that is benign tends to be small in size and grows more slowly than a cancerous mass, informs Cleveland Clinic. A benign tumor also has a higher calcium content and appears smooth and uniform in shape when compared to its malignant counterparts. For most individuals with a benign lung mass, no additional treatment is needed other than periodic monitoring.
