How can you make your clothes smell good?

Keep your clothes smelling fresh without adding a lot of time to the normal laundry routine. Purchase a lemon, white vinegar and borax to help eliminate odors. Borax is located with the laundry detergent.

1. Pretreat the wash

   Make your own laundry pretreatment solution by mixing 1 tablespoon of laundry detergent, the juice of one lemon and one-half gallon of warm water. Use the solution to soak smelly socks and to scrub the underarms and collars of shirts.

2. Increase the temperature

   Set the washing machine temperature to the warmest setting safe for the clothes. Warm water helps the detergent in removing smells.

3. Measure the detergent

   Without measuring, you are using the wrong amount. Too little detergent leaves laundry smelling bad. Too much wastes money and leaves a soapy residue on the clothes.

4. Boost the laundry detergent

   Add one-half cup of borax to each load. It's a natural laundry additive that helps to remove stains and smells.

5. Replace your fabric softener

   Fabric softeners leave a residue on clothes that traps odors and make it difficult for detergent to penetrate the fabric to eliminate smells.
