A MOSFET is a device that can amplify or switch electric signals in circuit design. They are often used in circuit situations where voltage needs to be converted. In PC motherboard design, MOSFETs will alter voltage from a general source to distribute to specific components with different voltage requirements.

MOSFETs come in four types; they can possess either enhancement or depletion modes and be either n-channel or p-channel.
