To remove oil stains from silk, scrape away any surface grease or oil, and cover the stain with talcum powder or cornstarch. Gently work the powder into the oily area with a soft-bristled brush, and let it sit for 24 hours. Brush or vacuum the silk to remove the powder.
- Scrape off surface grease
Use the smooth edge of a butter knife to carefully remove excess grease. Work carefully to avoid damaging the fabric.
- Apply talcum powder or cornstarch to the stain
Liberally cover the stained area with a coating of talcum powder or cornstarch. The powder absorbs the oil. Do not use water.
- Work the powder into the stain with a brush
Use a soft-bristled brush to work the powder or cornstarch into the stain. Silk is a delicate fabric so be gentle.
- Let the powder sit on the stain for 24 hours
Set the item aside, and give the powder 24 hours to absorb the oil.
- Remove the powder
Remove the powder by brushing and shaking silk clothing items. For silk upholstery, vacuum well. The oil residue comes away with the powder.
- Repeat as necessary
If any oil marks remain, reapply the powder, and let the item sit for another 24 hours. Brush or vacuum, and repeat a third time if necessary.
