According to Consumer Reports, Pepto Bismol should be avoided during pregnancy. Before 20 weeks of pregnancy, Pepto Bismol can be taken in moderation, but it isn't recommended. After 20 weeks, Pepto Bismol should not be taken at all.
Pepto Bismol is an over-the-counter drug that is used for nausea and diarrhea. According to American Family Physician, the drug contains an ingredient known as bismuth subsalicylate that can be dangerous to the fetus during pregnancy. Bismuth subsalicylate can cross the placenta and cause the fetus to absorb salicylate, which can lead to fetal deformities. American Family Physician recommends that pregnant women avoid taking Pepto Bismol throughout their entire pregnancy.
