A number of websites, such as WebMD and BedBugsBites.net, contain pictures of bed bugs on human skin. Several institutions, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Arlington County Public Health Department, also provide images and information on bed bugs.

Bed bugs are small, flat insects that are incapable of flight. Most bed bugs are the size of an apple seed, and their color ranges from white to brown. They are considered a public health pest by the EPA. As of March 2015, bed bugs are not known to transmit diseases; however, their bites can cause itchy, red swellings or welts.
