Can you get piercings while pregnant?

A woman can get certain piercings while pregnant, states the American Pregnancy Association. The association recommends that women don't get the belly button, nipples or genitalia pierced when pregnant as the open wounds may be more susceptible to infection.

With any piercing, the recipient always runs the risk of an infection if the tools used are not properly sterilized, the American Pregnancy Association states. This puts an unborn fetus at risk as well. It is safest to avoid all piercings while pregnant in case of infections. If a pregnant woman has existing piercings that have fully healed, there's no need to remove them unless the changes of her body begin to make wearing the jewelry uncomfortable.
