Pleurisy can cause pain in the chest and can also cause pain in the back, as reported by Mayo Clinic. Pleurisy can also cause shortness of breath and, in some cases, coughing.
Pleurisy is caused by a fluid build-up in the pleural space that causes pressure in the chest, and in extreme cases, it can cause infection and collapse of the lungs, states Mayo Clinic. In some rare cases, pleurisy can also be accompanied by a mild fever, known as empyema. If there are signs of fever, signs of a collapsed lung or other signs of infection, seek medical attention immediately.
