The pain and symptoms of pleurisy can come back if the underlying cause remains untreated, according to MedicineNet. Pleurisy is inflammation of the tissue lining the lungs and inner chest, often due to fluid accumulation in the chest cavity.
Symptoms of pleurisy include coughing, shortness of breath, tenderness and sharp chest pain, states MedicineNet. The pain worsens when breathing. Removal of the accumulated fluid can relieve the pain and shortness of breath but can also temporarily increase the pain due to the lack of lubrication between the lung walls. Many different conditions cause pleurisy, including tuberculosis, congestive heart failure, pulmonary embolism, infections and cancer.
