Can a PS3 play AVI files?

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) only plays certain types of AVI files, such as MPEG-4 and Motion JPEG. The types of videos and files played depend on the format and the presence or absence of copy protection or playback restrictions.

The PS3 does not support all AVI codecs. For supported codecs, the media does not play on the PS3 if playback restrictions exist. The PS3 accepts the following formats:

  • Memory Stick Files
    • MPEG-4 SP
    • MPEG-2 TS
    • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
  • MP4 Files
    • H.264/MPEG-4 AVC
    • MPEG-1
    • MPEG-2 TS
    • MPEG-2 PS
  • AVI
    • Motion JPEGs
  • AVCHD
  • DivX
  • WMV
  • VC-1

One way around the file restrictions is to stream content from the PC to the PS3. Use the Windows Media Player 11/12 application from the PlayStation Store to do this. It is free to download and use, plus everything shared in the Windows Media Player on the home network can be streamed.
