Can you put ceramic tile over Formica?

Formica, a plastic laminate used for decorative purposes, can be tiled over with ceramic tiles. The process of doing so requires that the Formica surface be prepared beforehand to accept the thin-set adhesive used for the ceramic layer before the tiling can begin.

Preparation of the surface of the Formica is done by lightly sanding the laminate with coarse sandpaper. This roughens up the Formica, giving the ceramic tile adhesive a better surface to grip to. After removing any dust from the Formica using a damp cloth, a layer of thin-set adhesive is applied to the laminate, and the ceramic tiles are set onto the adhesive to cover it.
