While retailers such as Arowana Proshop do offer red arowana for sale, it is illegal to buy, sell or possess this species in the United States. As of 2015, no reputable fish trader, domestic or otherwise, sells red arowana to U.S. buyers for fear of prosecution.

The arowana is a critically endangered fish. There is a complete ban on the trade of this species in the United States, and federal prosecution of sellers, even foreign ones, is not infrequent. For example, in 2012, the state of New York charged a Canadian pet shop owner with a felony for selling arowana to U.S. buyers. Arowana Proshop advises prospective owners to check with their country's regulations before they attempt to buy from the site.
