Self-removal of corns and calluses is not recommended, according to WebMD. Over-the-counter treatments such as corn plasters cause chemical burns, which may cause infection, ulceration or lasting damage.
Corns and calluses often disappear on their own when the patient removes the source of pressure or friction that caused it, states WebMD. Wearing moleskin pads help reduce pressure while wearing shoes. For excessively thick calluses, patients can use a pumice stone to remove dead skin before applying moisturizer to soften the skin and speed resolution of the callus. In some severe cases, a doctor may shave the callus or prescribe urea cream.
