How can you get rid of clover?

Clover can be killed through natural methods or using herbicides. Clover is a perennial weed that prefers nitrogen-depleted soils where it grows close to the ground.

Clover helps grass grow healthier and it prevents pests, but controlling overgrowth may be necessary. Follow one of these methods below to remove clover from grass.

• Make sure the lawn is well-fed - since clover prefers nutrient deficient areas, keeping the soil fertilized will control its growth. To ensure proper nutrient and pH levels, use a cornmeal fertilizer and apply every 120 days. A 10-pound application of cornmeal should be used for every 1,000 sq. ft.
• Add mulch - if clover needs to be removed from flower beds, a thick layer of mulch should be added to prevent clover seeds from germinating
• Use the hand pulling method - since clover is usually found in clumps, it can be removed using the hand pulling method as well. Pull the clover out with hands making sure to remove as much of the root system as possible
• Apply an herbicide - a broadleaf weed killer combination or a three-way herbicide, such as Trimec, should be applied in early fall. Make sure to read the instructions on the label. The herbicide should have two or three of the following ingredients: 2, 4-D, mecoprop or MCPP, decamba, dichlorprop, clopyralid and triclopyr. Avoid applications on rainy or snowy days and use a spray instead of a granular product. Mix in a squirt of dishwasher soap, so that the herbicide can adhere to the clover effectively.
