Syracuse University has a rich tradition in men's basketball that dates back to 1901. They have appeared in the NCAA tournament 37 times, with five Final Four appearances, including a National Championship in 2003.

In 1972, women's basketball arrived on the hardwood. Since the NCAA started a women's tournament in 1982, the Lady Orange have made six appearances. Both teams play in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
