Can severed limbs be re-attached?

While reattachment of severed limbs has occurred, it is not the possible, practical or safe solution for most patients as of 2014, according to the Boston Globe. The paper reported on a May 2014 story of a teenager who went through a successful arm reattachment surgery.
In the teen's case, arm reattachment was possible because of his age and quick-thinking measures he took after the accident, according to the Boston Globe. He tied off the injury at his elbow and immediately went for help. The entire reattachment took four surgeries and over 40 hours for completion. The odds and the great risks make similar reattachments impossible in many cases.
