Can you tell the age of a Whirlpool washer by the serial number?

If a Whirlpool washer was built in or after 1970, it is possible to tell its age by its serial number. It is, however, necessary to decode the letters and numbers within the code first.

The first letter in the Whirlpool serial number indicates the manufacturing division code. The second letter relates to the year of manufacture. To determine which letter relates to which year, a conversion table such as that supplied by Electrical Forensics is needed. The first and the second digit in the code relate to the week of that year in which the appliance was manufactured, and the remaining digits state the order of manufacture within that week.
