How can you tell what kind of cat you have?

A cat must have a traceable pedigree covering several generations before it can be registered as a pedigree cat of a particular breed. Any cat without a pedigree is considered to be a domestic cat. Domestic cats can be short haired, medium haired or long haired.
Cats of both pedigreed and domestic types are further distinguished by their coloration. One of the most common color patterns is the tabby, a cat with stripes. Cats can also be a solid color. Calico and tortoiseshell patterns are exhibited by tricolor cats. Some cats have a color pattern called "pointed," most commonly seen in Siamese pedigreed cats.
