Deep vein thrombosis, or a blood clot in a vein of the leg, causes recognizable symptoms. These symptoms include swelling of the leg, skin discoloration that is reddish or bluish in color, tenderness, and pain, and the leg is warm to the touch, according to the National Blood Clot Alliance.
A blood clot is often described as feeling like a pulled muscle, but other symptoms are normally present as well. Deep vein thrombosis is life threatening. If a blood clot is suspected, immediate medical treatment is recommended. The blood clot may break free and travel to the lungs, which causes pulmonary embolism and death, notes the National Blood Clot Alliance.
