Afrin should be used during pregnancy only when it is definitely needed, according to WebMD. Whether Afrin makes it into breast milk is unclear, so a woman who is pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor to discuss the risks and benefits for use of this drug.
Afrin is used as a nasal decongestant, lessening congestion from the common cold, sinusitis, hay fever and allergies, states WebMD. Common side effects may include a temporary burning or stinging sensation in the nose, a runny nose or sneezing. Many Afrin users don't have serious side effects. The possible serious side effects may include dizziness, nausea, heartburn, tremors, difficulty sleeping and unusual heartbeat.
