Healthline advises against taking an enema to relieve constipation during pregnancy. Before consulting a doctor for a recommendation of over-the-counter remedies, increase fiber intake, exercise regularly and drink more water.

Constipation, a common pregnancy complaint affecting up to half of pregnant women, results from an increase in progesterone levels in the body. BabyCenter explains that because this hormone is a smooth muscle relaxant, the passing of food through the digestive tract is slowed, and bowel movements become difficult. Aside from changes in diet and exercise, switching iron supplements and regular bathroom visits can also help to relieve constipation and eliminate the need for an enema or stool softener.
