What can you use for flavor instead of salt when developing sodium-free recipes?

Fresh or dried herbs can enhance the flavor of fresh foods without salt, as can a squeeze of lemon. Salt-free seasoning mixes such as Mrs. Dash or homemade variations can also be added to food.
To make a simple salt-free seasoning mix combine 2 tablespoons of paprika, 2-3 teaspoons cayenne pepper, 2 tablespoons garlic powder, 2 teaspoons onion powder, 1 tablespoon dry mustard and 1 teaspoon cumin. Mix well to combine.
When baking, look for sodium-free baking power and baking soda; follow manufacturers' instructions for correct substitution amounts. Canned soup and low-fat versions of products are often very high in salt, so consume these products in moderation.
