Gout symptoms can be alleviated at home by applying ice to affected joints in order to reduce swelling, according to WebMD. When icing, always wrap ice in a cloth before using against bare skin, and do not apply for longer than 15 to 20 minutes at a time.
Other home treatments for gout include taking an over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, such as ibuprofen or naproxen, states WebMD. It is important to avoid aspirin as it can cause an unanticipated change in uric acid levels, resulting in increased pain. Rest and elevation of affected joints can also lessen the pain associated with an acute attack. Lifestyle choices, such as a moderate exercise program and limited alcohol, meat and seafood consumption, have shown to be helpful in preventing gout attacks.
