Can I use liquid dish detergent to get a butter stain out of clothing?

The best way to remove butter stains from clothing is to use a prewash stain-removing laundry treatment. Other options include liquid dish detergent, which may help if a prewash treatment is not available or does not work.

If a quick, emergency fix for a butter spill is needed, Good Housekeeping suggests trying granulated artificial sweetener. The granules should sit on the stain for a few minutes, and get brushed off once they have absorbed the excess. It is recommended to use a prewash treatment and launder the garment as soon as possible. Baking soda or cornstarch can also act as absorbents. Some butter stains can be treated by blotting with dry cleaning solvent or by trying a solution of 1 tablespoon of dish detergent and 1 tablespoon of white vinegar in 2 cups of warm water.
