There is no evidence that supports worms are caused by eating raw cookie dough. However, eating raw cookie dough does pose other health risks.
The risk of E.coli exposure is present when consuming raw cookie dough. E. coli is a type of bacteria that live in the intestine and can make an individual sick. Symptoms include mild upset stomach and diarrhea. In severe cases, respiratory problems and pneumonia can occur.
Eating raw cookie dough also poses a risk of a salmonella infection. Salmonella is another bacteria that can cause food poisoning. Symptoms include fever, upset stomach and cramps. Symptoms can last for four to seven days, usually subsiding without treatment.
