Donations of clothing made to a charitable organization does get taxpayers a tax write-off at the fair market value of the items donated, TurboTax explains. No deduction is allowed unless the item is in good condition.
Congress has given broad authority to the IRS to help ensure that taxpayers are not inflating the estimated amounts of clothing items donated, TurboTax reports. Congress has also given the IRS the authority to deny low-cost donated items, such as socks and underwear. When preparing taxes, taxpayers should keep track of all items donated, and obtain receipts showing proof of donations. Taxpayers claiming a deduction of items valued at over $500 must attach Form 8283 to their returns.
