Algiers is the capital city of Algeria and is the country's largest city. It is located in its north-central region on the Mediterranean Sea. It is an important Algerian port. In 2010, Algiers had a population of 3.5 million.

The modern area of the city is located on the bay at sea level. Behind the city there is a steep hill that leads to the ancient city of Icosium. Algiers was founded in 944 at a site that was once a Phoenician outpost and a Roman town. In this area, there is the rue de la Marine, which was once a Roman street.
