Helsinki is the capital city of Finland. The city is located at the southern tip of the country, by the Baltic Sea. Helsinki was founded in 1550 by King Gustavus of Sweden, before Finland became an independent nation.
Helsinki was first named the capital of Finland while under the control of the Russian government in 1809, taking the place of the former capital, Turku. In 1917, Finland gained independence and retained Helsinki as the capital. Helsinki is the largest city in Finland. The city is a popular tourist destination for both summer and winter sports and hosted the Olympic Games in 1952.
