The capital city of Finland is Helsinki. Located on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, Helsinki is also the largest city in the region.

Often considered to be the global gateway of Finland because of the large immigrant population, Helsinki was originally established in the 1500s as a major trading town. As of 2014, the city is one of the most populated in the area, and there are slightly more women than men. Like all major Finnish cities, the city council makes all of the major decisions, including issues on city planning, schools, health care and public transportation.
