Hagåtña is the capital city of Guam, which is a U.S. territory located in the western Pacific Ocean. The capital is Guam's second-smallest village and encompasses just 1 square mile. As of 2010, the village had a population of only 1,051 people.
Guam was originally surrendered to the United States during the Spanish-American War. Just hours after the World War II attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Japan captured Guam and held it for 2.5 years although the island was recaptured by the United States in 1944. The city was damaged severely during its liberation, and many residents relocated to other parts of the island after World War II.
