The capital city of Honduras is Tegucigalpa. Tegucigalpa became the capital on October 30, 1880 during the period in which Marco Aurelio Soto served as the nation's president. The nearby city of Comayagüela was also chosen to join with Tegucigalpa as the Central District of Honduras.
The Spanish first claimed Tegucigalpa on September 29, 1578. The city is the largest in Honduras, and is also the most populated. Tegucigalpa is known as the political center of Honduras, making it home to a number of foreign embassies and consulates. The national soccer team for Honduras is also based out of Tegucigalpa.
