What is the capital of North Korea?

Pyongyang is the capital city of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea. More than 3.2 million people live in the city, according to a 2008 government census.

Between 1910 and 1945, Pyongyang was controlled by Japanese forces, who lost control of the city in World War II. The city was then occupied by the Soviet Union and became a capital city once more in 1953 at the end of the Korean conflict.

The name Pyongyang, when translated into English, literally means "peaceful land." The city sits on the Taedong River, the second largest river in the country.
