How do you take care of a mandevilla plant?

Mandevilla plants produce large vines with pink, white and red flowers. Growing healthy mandevillas is easy, as long you grow them in the right setting, pay attention to detail and care for them as necessary.
Provide adequate conditions
Mandevilla plants require partial shade, and intermittent sunlight throughout the day. To prevent mildew, provide plenty of air circulation. Move the plant inside during the winter.
Use the right kind of soil
Mandevilla plants thrive in loose soil that contains plenty of organic matter. Use well-drained soil to prevent overhydration.
Water frequently
If the soil is dry to the touch, provide enough water to fully moisturize it to a depth of 2 inches, without letting it get muddy. Check the soil often to make sure it doesn't dry out.
Fertilize the plant
On a bi-weekly basis, feed the plant a fertilizer with twice as much phosphorous as potassium and nitrogen. A 10-20-10 blend is ideal.
Prune as needed
While the plant is still developing, pinch back the vines where the leaf buds out during the spring. Remove dead or crowding vines when the plant is mature.
Remove pests
Signs of an infestation include yellow or brown spots and weary, dry leaves. Use a strong stream from a hose to knock off pests. Ladybugs and lacewings help to control pests.
