Care for tomato plants by placing them in a sunny location, watering them well, mulching them to keep the soil moist, fertilizing the plants and supporting the plants with stakes. You need water, mulch, fertilizer and stakes.
- Place the plants in a good location
Place the plants in a location that receives plenty of sunlight. The soil needs to be slightly acidic, well-drained and loamy.
- Water the plants well
Water the plants well after first planting them. Taper off watering after a couple of days while still watering them regularly. The plants need at least 2 inches of water per week. During dry weather, place a flat rock next to each plant to keep the soil from drying out.
- Mulch the tomato plants
Apply a layer of mulch to the plants five weeks after planting the plants. This helps the soil to stay moist and inhibits weed growth.
- Fertilize the plants
Fertilize the tomato plants twice, once about two weeks before the fruit are ready to be harvested and again four weeks later.
- Support the plants
Stake or place cages around the plants to support them as they grow. If you have plenty of room, you can allow the plants to sprawl along the ground.
