CarMax was founded in Richmond, Virginia in 1993. The company buys and sells used cars, as well as finances auto loans for customers. CarMax inspects and repairs the vehicles prior to selling them.

As of July 2015, CarMax operates 144 stores. The company was started by the founders of the now defunct Circuit City electronics store. Despite this positive recognition, the company has had some controversy with consumer groups that allege the company fails to fix recalled vehicles.
