The four symbols of confirmation in Catholicism are the laying on the person with the hands, the anointing with chrism, the signing with the cross and the gift of peace. Confirmation is a Catholic sacrament through which a person is sealed into the Christian life, and it comes after baptism and the receiving of the Holy Eucharist.
The bishop first lays his hand on the person being confirmed. The bishop then takes some oil that has been blessed and makes the sign of the cross using the oil on the person's forehead. Finally, the person being confirmed receives the gift of peace. A sponsor who has mentored the person throughout the confirmation process serves as a witness during the confirmation ceremony.
