Mathematical symbols describe mathematical numbers, operations and expressions, according to RapidTables.com. The "+" symbol signals the need to add the numbers on either side of it together.
The "-" symbol indicates subtraction of the second number from the first number in the equation. The "=" symbol means two numbers are equal or that the equation before the "=" sign is equal to the number after it. For example, "1+2=3" means the numbers 1 and 2 added together are equal to the number 3. If a number is greater than another number, the ">" symbol appears, while the "<" symbol shows that one number is less than the other.
