What is a Catholic homily?

The Catholic homily is a speech given by the priest after the scripture readings that helps the congregation relate to the message of the Bible more readily. Sometimes a lay person or a deacon may give the homily instead of the priest.
The homily is meant to reach the audience in the church and not tackle larger world issues. A priest often uses his own experiences while giving the homily. Homilies occur during every regular mass, and they also take place during special masses during funerals and weddings. During special Catholic seasons, such as Lent or Advent, the homily often reflects that time of the year.
