Do cats like music?

Research indicates that cats can have positive, negative and neutral responses to specific music. The tempo, pattern and tone seem to be influencing factors, but as of 2014, scientists don't know if cats enjoy music.

Cats respond to music that occupies a tempo near their resting heart rate with a frequency around their vocal range. Human music is based on human heart rates and vocalization, which are much slower and lower than a cat. Cats typically show indifference to human music unless it has rapid rhythm and very high frequencies.

Cats don't appear capable of understanding music in the same fashion as humans. Researchers observe the psychological effects of music in a behavioral context with little grasp of whether or not a cat actually enjoys the music.
