Helen Keller died "gently" in her sleep at the age of 87, according to her obituary in the New York Times. She suffered a stroke in 1960, when she withdrew from public life before her death on June 1, 1968.
Helen Keller was best known as the young woman who overcame blindness and deafness with the help of her teacher, Annie Sullivan, and became an advocate for the blind. She graduated from Radcliffe University, wrote several books and toured in vaudeville before settling down. She received many honors from universities and presidents and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Lyndon Johnson.
