Helen Keller's teacher was Anne Sullivan. She began teaching Helen in March 1887 by using sign language to spell words against Keller's palm. When Sullivan arrived, Keller needed to learn discipline and obedience, which Sullivan successfully taught by removing Keller from the family's main house and living with her in a nearby cottage.
Sullivan used Keller's remaining senses of touch, smell and taste in their lessons. Sullivan succeeded by conducting many of the lessons outside, allowing Keller significant, guided interactions with her environment. It took just a month for Sullivan to teach Keller the meanings of several words. The film "The Miracle Worker" depicts their relationship.
