What are some causes of mild cardiomegaly?

The most frequent causes of cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, are high blood pressure and coronary artery disease, explains WebMD. Less common causes include viral infection, abnormal heart valve, kidney disease, alcohol and cocaine abuse, and genetic and inherited conditions.
While most cardiolmegaly patients do not experience any symptoms, shortness of breath, leg swelling, weight gain, fatigue and palpitations or skipped heartbeats may result when the enlarged heart becomes unable to pump blood effectively, explains WebMD. Complications that eventually may arise from an enlarged heart include heart failure, blood clots, heart murmur and cardiac arrest or sudden death, explains Mayo Clinic.
