According to WebMD, pain in the back of the leg can be caused by muscle cramps, tendinitis, broken bones, blood clots, infections and lower-extremity peripheral arterial disease, among other causes. Sciatica and diabetic neuropathy are conditions that begin elsewhere in the body but can cause pain to the leg.
The Mayo Clinic points out that if pain in the leg is accompanied by the inability to stand or walk, swelling and redness on the calf, or a popping sound when a leg injury occurs, immediate treatment at the emergency room is necessary. Someone with pain in her leg should see a doctor if the pain is accompanied by signs of infection, swelling or breathing problems.
