What causes pressure sores?

Pressure sores are caused by constant pressure on the skin, which is often associated with prolonged immobility and improper care. These sores, which are also called bedsores, often occur on bony parts of the body, such as the tailbone, hips and ankles, according to MayoClinic.
People who are immobile and those who have limited mobility often need help to change positions to minimize the risk of pressure sores. When left untreated, these pressure sores can turn into open, oozing sores that may lead to an infection.
Pressure sores often develop quickly. Treating them is often difficult because of how fast they can worsen. While treating them is possible, preventing them is a better option.
