Three common contributing factors to heartburn are fatty foods, large portions and late-night meals, according to WebMD. Alcohol, spicy foods and chocolate are also significant heartburn triggers.

In addition, citrus, caffeine, peppermint and tomatoes often lead to heartburn, says WebMD.

Exercise routines that involve the abdominal muscles can cause acid to enter the esophagus, which also triggers heartburn, notes WebMD. Such exercises include crunches, leg lifts and various yoga poses. For this reason, it is best to avoid exercising on a full stomach.

Frequent use of aspirin, certain blood pressure medication and ibuprofen is sometimes a contributing factor in heartburn as well, explains WebMD.
