What are some causes of stenotic cervix?

Some women are born with a stenotic cervix, but for others, it is the result of a disorder or other condition, according to Merck Manual. Cancer is one possible cause. Two others are cervical surgery and procedures that affect the lining of the uterus.

Radiation therapy used in treating cervical cancer, or cancer in the lining of the uterus, may result in a stenotic cervix. Symptoms may include menstrual abnormalities, including no periods, painful periods or abnormal bleeding. If symptoms occur, doctors test for possible conditions. Once diagnosed, cervical widening treats the condition, says Merck Manual. Cervical stenosis after menopause may occur asymptomatically.
