Pregnancy, overconsumption of salty food, premenstrual symptoms, and sitting or standing in one position for too long cause mild cases of edema, states Mayo Clinic. Edema can also be caused by estrogens, certain diabetes medications, high blood pressure medications, steroid drugs and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
Liver damage can cause fluid to collect in the abdominal cavity, causing weeping leg edema, explains Mayo Clinic. Blood backed up in the legs caused by congestive heart failure also causes weeping leg edema. Extra fluid and sodium in the circulation caused by kidney disease causes edema, and weakness or damage to the veins causes blood to accumulate in the veins, causing swelling.
