Blood, certain foods and certain medications can cause urine to turn reddish or pinkish, according to Mayo Clinic. Urinary blood is called hematuria. Causes of hematuria include urinary tract infections, tumors, an enlarged prostate and long-distance running. Additional causes include kidney cysts, kidney stones or bladder stones.
Foods such as blackberries, rhubarb and beets can turn urine red or pink, explains Healthline. Pyridium, the drug treatment for urinary tract infections, can turn urine reddish orange. Rifampin, an antibiotic treatment for tuberculosis, can as well. Lead or mercury poisoning can also cause urine to turn red, as can laxatives containing senna.
