Medusa was once a beautiful woman. She had an affair with Poseidon in the temple of Athena, which enraged the virgin goddess. As revenge, Athena turned Medusa into a terrifying snake-haired monster who turned men to stone if they looked at her.

Medusa is most well-known for her role in the story of Perseus, the young hero who killed Medusa. Perseus continued to use Medusa's head in battles, since it still turned men into stone even after it was removed from her body.
